The Relentless: Maria Tanase

“Nesupusele” (the Relentless) is a book in two volumes evoking the personalities of 100 remarkable Romanian women who made a difference in the past century.

Four writers, Adina Rosetti, Iulia Iordan, Laura Grunberg and Victoria Pătrașcu conceived it as an alternative education project which, through 1oo stories, embraces themes as cultural diversity, developing values as patriotism or civic spirit or cultivating respect for small, day to day history besides public history. One can find remarcable personalities inside, but also common biographies that deserve to be told.

This is the portrait of Maria Tanase (1913 – 1963), a well known Romanian folk music singer. The book’s requirements asked for an image whose composition was half coloured – half black & white, and for a relevant visual metaphor of her personality and life.
